Summary
  • The pioneers: This first Leatherstocking tale takes place on the rapidly advancing frontier of New York States and features a middle-aged Leatherstocking (Natty Bumppo), Judge Marmaduke Temple of Templeton, and Elizabeth Temple of Cooperstown. The story begins with an argument between the Judge and Leatherstocking over who killed a buck, and reviews many of the changes to New York's Lake Otsego, questions of environmental stewardship, conservation, and use prevail. The plot develops as Leatherstocking and Chingachgook begin to compete with the Temples for the loyalties of a mysterious young visitor, "Oliver Edwards," the young hunter who eventually marries Elizabeth. Chingachgook dies, and Natty vanishes into the sunset
  • The last of the Mohicans: This second Leatherstocking tale takes place in 1757, during the French and Indian War (the Seven Years' War), when France and Great Britain battled for control of the North American colonies. During this war, the French called on allied Native American tribes to fight against the more numberous British colonists
  • The prairie: This third Leatherstocking tales opens with Ishmael, his family, Ellen and Abiram slowly making their way across the virgin prairies of the Midwest looking for a homestead, just two years after the Louisiana Purchase, and during the time of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. They meet trapper Natty Bumppo, and later suffer attack, captivity, and death at the hands of the Tetons
  • The pathfinder: This fourth Leatherstocking tale finds the pathfinder, Natty Bumppo examining his role as an explorer for British/Colonial forces in the forests and islands around the Great Lakes. He, also falls in love for the first and only time in the novels, only to see his choice all in love with another man
  • The deerslayer: This fifth and final Leatherstocking tale is considered a prequel to the previous stories. Natty Bumppo is introduced as "Deerslayer," a young frontiersman in early 18th century New York. He is constrasted to toher frontiersmen and settlers in the novel who have no compunction in taking scalps. His natural philosophy is that every living thing should follow "the gifts" of its nature--which would deep European Americans from taking scalps
